All About Waterproof TV

The Key Requirements and how TileVision fills the bill

Is it safe?

Because a waterproof television is probably going to be installed in a bathroom, shower, or wetroom, there is always the possibility of someone slipping and falling against the screen. The waterproof TV’s screen must therefore be completely unbreakable in all expected circumstances.

To prevent the risk of injury from a broken screen, all TileVision televisions have the screen made of 6mm thick toughened safety glass. The screens conform to BS 6206:1981 class A under Kite Mark License No. KM07504 and to BS 7449:1991 (clause 6) for vertically glazed domestic panels.

TileVision has been tested by an accredited independent testing house and is compliant with the following tests: Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), Electromagnetic Field (EMF), Electrical Safety, and Ingress Protection (IP). This testing means that all TileVision units are CE approved and carry the CE marking.

Is it Truly Waterproof?

Any electronic device which is installed in a high humidity area such as a bathroom should be waterproof. If an item is not waterproof, moisture will penetrate and possibly offer a risk of electrocution. Any moisture may also cause corrosion and shorten the life of the appliance.

A TileVision is designed to be sealed into a stainless steel ‘back box’ which has been firmly fixed into a recess in a wall. When installed as shown in the instructions the seal is waterproof and meets the IP65 test specification. The stainless steel back box is connected to an electrical earth point and there is absolutely no risk of electric shock.

Is the Picture Clear and Mist Free?

Any cool surface such as a mirror or tiles and fitments in a bathroom or other humid environment will tend to allow condensation to form.

When a TileVision is in use the screen is heated and condensation will not form – the picture stays completely ‘mist free’, even in the steamiest of bathrooms.

Is it a Digital TV?

The television broadcast system in the UK is in the process of being changed from analogue to digital. The switchover process should be complete by 2012 when the last analogue transmitter will be switched off.

TileVision waterproof TV sets have included digital tuners to receive all free-to-air digital TV and radio since October 2007. The TV19 and TV26 models, also include a Common Interface (CI) Port to accept an adaptor so that a smart card can be used to allow subscription TV channels to be enjoyed. TileVision waterproof televisions are also fully compatible with digital text (MHEG-5) broadcasts.

Does a TileVision Have All the Right Connections?

A waterproof TV should have all the inputs required for maximum versatility.

Current TileVision models have connections for all expected sources and equipment. The connectors on the TileVision include: EURO-SCART connector with all pins connected (Input and Output), High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) Input, Component Video Input (Y, Pb, Pr), Composite Video Input (CVBS), Audio Input (L+R), PC Video Input (RGB), PC Audio Input (L+R), Audio Output (headphone), Antenna/Tuner Input (75 ohm Co-axial), and Loudspeaker Clip Terminal Outputs.

In addition to the standard inputs listed above, the TileVision connector arrays include connections for more specialist use:

Sky™ Remote Link facility is included so that a Sky™ remote control can be used to control a Sky™ or Sky™+ box via the infrared receiver on the TileVision.

There is an IR Link In connector to allow infrared (IR) code to be received from external equipment or an IR receiver. There is also an IR Link Out socket so the TileVision can pass IR codes received by the TileVision's IR receiver to external equipment or an IR emitter.

An RJ12 connector is included to enable the TileVision to integrate with Interactive Hotel TV systems, and an RS-232 Control Port is included to enable the TileVision to be connected to a home automation control system so that the televisions can be fully integrated in a multi-room AV system.

Is the Remote Control Waterproof?

The TileVision remote controls are waterproof and meet the IP67 specification – they float, and even though the remote controls are waterproof their 3 volt button cell battery can be changed by the user. The remote controls include all the buttons needed for the digital text services which are replacing traditional Teletext, and for maximum convenience, a self-adhesive, transparent, remote control holder is included so that the remote control can be kept in a convenient location.

Are the Loudspeakers Water Resistant?

A waterproof TV must have a loudspeaker system which is suitable for use in a high humidity environment.

The TileVision speaker employs PEI plastic resin and polypropylene and is water resistant. The speaker is flush-mount and is designed to be ceiling or wall mounted.

Is it Proven Technology?

TileVision was the world’s first waterproof TV and two models were available in the UK during 2001. The two models were the TileVision TV104FR, a TV with a 10.4" screen, and the TV15FR, a model with a 15" screen.

Thanks to the improvements in LCD screen technology over the last few years, the screens on the current models are larger and give higher definition, but both the current models are based on the same, proven, method of construction as the original units.
