[TX-NR807]

Onkyo TX-NR807. 7.1 channel AV receiver. HD audio and video conversion/scaling to 1080p. Dolby Pro Logic IIz and Audyssey DSX. Ethernet audio in for PC/Internet streaming. Additional DAB tuner option, serial control and THX Select2+ certified.

The TX-NR807 as the NR in the name suggests, is a network receiver meaning it is capable of being linked to your home network and streaming audio from your PC. With an internet connection on the network too it can access internet radio such as Last FM and vTuner. It complies with the DLNA standard 1.5, the latest available.

As you would expect HDMI connections are plentiful. 6 are provided on the backpanel and the video circuit will take signals from the other connections and up convert them to HDMI. Faroudja DCDi Cinema than scales the images up to 1080p with processing to clean up the images on the way. For example smooth out jagged edges that may have been created in the deinterlacing process. Being HDMI1.3a the circuits are all able to pass Deep Colour, x.v.Colour, LipSync and all manner of HD audio formats/multichannel PCM.

In the amplification WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology) provides control for the damping of speakers and extra current during impedance fluctuations with Texas Instruments supplying the DSP chips to handle the massive number crunching required in decoding Dolby and DTS HD (DA830 and DA788). Burr-Brown 192 kHz/24-bit DAC's are used to perform digital-to-analogue processing. These have a high resistance to clock noise (jitter) resulting in a 120 dB dynamic range. (PCM1690). A High Current Power Supply ensures there is never a shortage of energy when a sudden demand is made on the amplification. The output stage of the is a push-pull design with three stage inverted Darlington circuitry. Different transistors are working on the each half of the amplified signal - positive and negative while the Darlington circuit ensures distortion is minimised and the sound is kept as pure as possible.

All this processing, design and build is covered by the THX Select 2 Plus badge. The strict criteria laid down by THX have to be met or exceeded before the badge can be awarded. Also THX modes are available in the processing to accuratly decode THX soundtracks.

Installation is simplified by the implementation of Audyssey processing. Plug in the supplied microphone, press go on the on-screen menu and wait while MULTEQ analyses your listening area and sets the receiver levels, time delays and EQ settings to provide the best response for the room. During playback Audyssey Dynamic EQ maintains a consistent bass response, tonal balance and surround effect at all volumes with Dynamic Volume evening out major fluctuations in audio level, typically found between adverts and programmes. Dynamic range is an important factor so during operation of Dynamic Volume the processing keeps this optimized.

iPod users are catered for as there is a 'Universal Port' on the rear panel to which you can connect the UP-A1 iPod dock. This connection can also connect to the hide away DAB tuner. The tuning details are then brought to the receiver's display with control coming from the normal handset. Facility is made in these optional accessories to use both on the system. A music Optimizer is included to improve the quality of any compressed music, breathing the life back in that can be lost by compression.

New processing in this series of receivers from Dolby and Audyssey helps create more expansive soundfields in a couple of ways. Dolby Pro -Logic IIz can be applied over other surround processing to create two extra front channels of audio. Thee are set above the front left/right speakers to add an extra dimension. Taking cues from the other channels, especially surround channels effects such as fly-overs are particularly impressive. Audyssey DSX processing can be used to similar effect or these extra speakers can be set wider than your front left and right channel to expand the front image.

Additional zones of audio can be created with their own sources. Pre-outs are provided to feed into these zones with all the switching done in the TX-NR807. The surround/surround back channels can be reassigned to these zones if required or used to bi-amp the front left and right speakers.

From all the zones, IR signals can be fed into the TX-NR807 rear mini jack by connection to an IR distribution system. This means the unit can be placed out of sight and signals still received. Alternatively a control system using RS232 can be used . Two 12v triggers are available, one for use in zone 2 and one for zone three. For IR systems see Xantech and RS232 controls see Philips or Xantech.
